Elementary Afterschool Programs
The following is a general description of our three after-school programs. Each of the programs is run out of a different school, therefore, they vary in specifics. If your child goes to one of these schools (P.S. 234, P.S. 89, or P.S. 150), and you are interested in the program, pick up a complete after-school package at the school, or call our office 212 766-1104, or click here.

What is a day in after-school like?
After-School care begins when the regular school day ends. The children are offered a snack, usually consisting of apples, bananas, and pretzel rods, until they are picked up by our club teachers. For the first half of the day in after-school, the children participate in one of our "clubs". For the second half, they are in multi-grade groupings for what we refer to as "free" or "variety" time, in one of our open play spaces, schoolyards, or gyms.

back to questions

Who can enroll in after-school?
To enroll in one of our after-school programs, each student must already be enrolled in the same school of the program they wish to attend.

back to questions

Who needs after-school?
Our after-school programs exist primarily to assist working parents with their child-care needs. We strive to provide a safe and enriching environment for all of our children and staff to interact in. Some people choose to take advantage of the variety of enriching "clubs" offered even though they may have other means of basic child-care available. We welcome parents and children with a variety of needs in our programs, and remind everyone that the enriching "clubs" are a secondary priority to the care and safety of all program participants.

back to questions

When does after-school take place?
Our after-school programs generally follow the regular public school calendar. If school is open, after-school is open. If school is closed, we’re closed. If school is cancelled due to an emergency situation, so are our after-school programs. With the exception of the week or so of half-days when most kindergarteners’ are dismissed at 11:30AM, after-school does stay open on the other half-days of the year. Another exception is that our after-school programs do not usually operate the first week of school, or the last day of the school year.

back to questions

Where does after-school take place?
After-school activities usually take place at the same school that the child attends during the day. Some exceptions to this may be if the child attends one of our swimming programs. We have our own pool located nearby in Battery Park City. Other exceptions should be noted in each program’s individual application and brochure.

back to questions

Who will be caring for my child at after-school?
Our after-school staff is made up of a combination of experienced child-care program directors, teachers and staff that work at each school during the school day, and many other professionals that come from both in and out of our local community to teach some of our other "clubs".

back to questions

What are some of the after-school activities my child can participate in?
Our after-school programs differ somewhat in the "clubs" that they offer from school to school. Check each program’s individual brochure for details. The following is a list of some examples from this current year: Swimming, Sewing and Crafts, Chess, Homework & Study, Computers, Art, Basketball, Spanish, French, Quiz Kids, K/1 Sports, Theatre, Cooking, Woodworking, Science, Karate, Asian Crafts, etc.

How do I enroll in a Manhattan Youth after-school program?
To enroll in one of the programs, you should inquire at the school itself for an application package.  Applications are usually filled out and returned with an initial payment to a drop box in each individual school, where they are collected daily and brought to our main administrative office for processing. If no applications are available at your particular school, you may call our main administrative office for more information at 212 766-1104, or click here for an application.
