Manhattan Youth Downtown Community Center Aquatics Program

The Downtown Community Center offers aquatics programs for all ages and abilities. Our full 25-yard, 4 lane pool is kept at a warm 88 degrees, creating an inviting environment for our swimming lessons and family swim.
**Our Spring Semester of swimming lessons begins Februaury 1st. We are currently taking registration. For class schedule or to register your child please contact us.
Running since 1993, the Manhattan Youth Swim School is Lower Manhattan's longest running Learn to Swim program. Now a major part of the Downtown Community Center, our swim lessons have successfully taught thousands of children in Lower Manhattan over the past 17 years. We offer swim lessons for all ages and abilities, from infants to adults. Add a DCC Family Membership to your child's swim lessons and you and your child can swim in our warm pool any day of the week to reinforce swim skills.
This class helps new swimmers become comfortable in and around the water. Songs and games will introduce basic beginner swim skills (such as kicking, splashing, and blowing bubbles) and create a positive experience for young children in the pool.
This class is drop-in and is offered to members of the Downtown Community Center. No additional registration is required.
These beginner swim lessons offer a more progressive curriculum for young swimmers who are ready to take the plunge! Through interaction with a parent/guardian and instructors, children learn basic breathing and locomotion techniques. After completion of these group lessons with a parent/guardian, swimmers may be ready to move up to the first level of our Learn-to-Swim program and feel comfortable taking a class on their own.
The Manhattan Youth Swim School offers small group lessons for children starting as young
as 3 years of age (Please note these are classes without a parent/guardian in the water.) Classes are taught by highly experienced, certified instructors. The Downtown Community Center proudly houses a regulation-length, four lane swimming pool, custom designed for our swimming program. Half of the length of the pool is 3 1/2 feet deep, which is shallow enough
for young children to stand with their faces above water, but deep enough for older swimmers
to swim laps. Instructors use pool teaching platforms for children who cannot stand in 3 feet of water.
Children are placed into classes first by age and then by ability. We have classes for all swimming levels, from the very beginner to advanced technique/endurance swimmers.
The first day of each session is always an evaluation day, and the groups are adjusted as needed.
The Tritons Swim Team is the highest level of Manhattan Youth's Swim School. It provides a team-like training atmosphere for swimmers who are ready for a team experience but who do not want to commit their time to competition travel. Swimming multiple times per week, swimmers gain endurance, improve fitness and self-confidence, refine their stroke technique, and learn competitive skills. The team is designed around the challenge of self-competition, where swimmers compete against their own best times. By setting and achieving attainable goals, swimmers are continually motivated. Swimmers must demonstrate specific skill requirements to enroll.
Members of the Downtown Community Center may schedule private swim lessons with one of our skilled instructors. Private lessons can be scheduled by appointment based on availability. For more information about Private Swim Lessons or to inquire about availability, please contact Sarah at 212-766-1104 x240 or sarah@downtowncommunitycenter.org
