PS 234 After-School Program

Welcome - At the end of the school day, classroom teachers dismiss all students registered for our program directly to our staff, who greet students with a healthy snack and a smile. Students eat and socialize with friends, decompressing from the school day and gearing up for after-school.

Class Time - The sports, arts and enrichment classes that you select when enrolling your child in the program are taught by certified teachers, teaching artists and activity specialists. Each day, your child is dismissed directly to our staff. After a healthy snack, Depending on our offerings students will have the option to attend an early class at 3:30pm or a late class at 4:40pm.

Before and After Class - Students choose from a list of structured and open play activities, set up by our team leaders. These activities include: study hall, gym sports, yard play, indoor games, arts & crafts, music and more. This activity is built into your child’s daily schedule as a structured free play before and after their selected club for the day.

Students at PS 234 may also sign up for classes at the Downtown Community Center (DCC). Every afternoon our team leaders will pick your child up upon dismissal and safely transition them to our Center.

Students invent their own superheroes: complete with unique superpowers, original alter egos, handmade capes and costumes, cartoons, skits, stories and more! The class explores a variety of stories and comics, while learning about all kinds of superheroes to figure out what it takes to become one.

Our blend of intramural sports and non-competitive sports skills and drills is sure to meet your young athlete's needs! Every kid knows that you don't really learn anything unless you make a mess and get your hands dirty. This class focuses on everything oozy, grimy, slippery and slimy that exists in nature or can be made (safely!) in a test tube. Fun for all!

Does your child love watching videos on social media? Your Mini Influencer is now a Manhattan Youth Journalist.  This class is an opportunity for students to learn how to write scripts, interview friends, and even our staff, record and edit videos. Students will also learn about internet safety and have the opportunity to create and operate a class fan page that can be shared, via private link, with family and friends.

In Jewelry making we use many materials and techniques to make earrings, bracelets, necklaces, beads, and rings, including wire, paper, clay, an assortment of beads/charms, and string. We make our own beads out of paper and clay, and learn different knot techniques to make bracelets. In DIY "Do It Yourself" we learn how to make all sorts of crafts out of many materials to make cards, magnets, picture frames, accessories, flower pots, decorations, and more!

This course is ideal for students who seek an introduction to graphic design or have a general interest in learning how to create and communicate through visual media. Through a comprehensive look at topics such as layout, typography, color, space, balance, and hierarchy, students will be exposed to the most effective uses of graphic design in today's visual world. Students will create projects such as posters, stickers and t-shirts.

DCC Cooking Around The World

Learning about international food expands your culinary experience and knowledge. This class will highlight the many different cuisines around the world. Students will learn how to make the recipe but also learn what factors influence what we are cooking and why. Some examples of the recipes we will make are dumplings, shakshuka, quiche, apple cake, chickpea curry. We will also take student requests.

DCC Zoology & Animal Care

Emphasizing the central role of evolution in generating diversity, your child will explore the many kingdoms, behaviors and ecology of animal species! Your child will also become Zookeepers learning the basics of animal care from feeding to cleaning the habitats in our Science Lab.

DCC Art School Prep

Throughout the year, students will develop a diverse body of work, including drawings, painting, print making, collage and sculpture, adhering to the 5th grade benchmark laid out in the NYC DOE Blueprint for the Visual Arts. With guidance from their instructor, students will create and assemble an impressive portfolio of artwork with which they can apply to schools specializing in art throughout the city.

After-School Swim Lessons

We are proud to offer Youth Swim Lessons as a choice in our After-School Programs. Children receive the same instruction and swim experience as our Youth swim lessons.  Your child will be picked up directly from their classroom at school dismissal, have a snack, and be transported to the Downtown Community Center for childcare activities provided by our After-school staff.

Hip Hop

A high-energy class for dancers of all experience levels. The dance studio will be hopping as students learn individual and teamwork skills that evolve into polished dance numbers. All students participate in a Manhattan Youth dance performance at the end of each semester

Kids will receive daily challenges of structures to build with Legos. There will also be time for students to explore on their own and in small groups, building creations of their own invention.

Together, the Dungeon Master (or DM) and players create an exciting story where their bold adventurers confront deadly perils. Even if the group doesn’t complete the adventure successfully, the good time and memories make everyone a winner!

Students learn basketball skills, good sportsmanship, and sense of team spirit. Players are divided into groups based on experience and skill level. Each class session includes a lesson filled with drills and a game or scrimmage.

No nuts! No dairy! No gluten! This allergy-free baking class allows your children to create delicious cookies and cakes galore by getting hands-on with ingredients safe for them to touch and eat. Join us on Fridays for some fun and relaxing gaming. We will have various devices and game stations set up for students to participate in some friendly gaming, matches, tournaments, or whatever type of gaming they would like to participate in. There will be an opportunity for students to engage in socializing and interaction with their peers while exploring shared interests.

Join our class to master the basics of music production and score your beloved TV scenes and movie moments with your own original music. In this class students will get a chance to explore the multiple uses of paper. Students will make paper sculptures, paper models, origami and get to use papier mache. Students will work in teams or even alone to build an origiami/3D-like city in the future, they'll make amazing paper roses, cool looking jets and so much more.

DCC Martial Arts & Self-Defense

Students learn self-defense, focus, concentration and discipline in a non-contact weekly martial arts workout. Classes are grouped by age and belt level. All levels work on forms, and bag work: kicks, punches, blocks and footwork. Sparring begins at yellow belt. At the end of each semester, we have an exhibition and test, where students have an opportunity for belt advancement (by teacher recommendation).
