PS 276 After-School Program

Structure & Variety: The After-School Schedule

Welcome - At the end of the school day, classroom teachers dismiss all students registered for our program directly to our staff, who greet students with a healthy snack and a smile. Students eat and socialize with friends, decompressing from the school day and gearing up for after-school.

Club Time - The sports, arts and enrichment classes that you select when enrolling your child in the program are taught by certified teachers, teaching artists and activity specialists. Each day, your child is dismissed directly to our staff.  After a healthy snack, students will attend their main club session from 3:00pm to 4:00pm.  After main clubs, they will go to their enrolled Late Club or attend Choice Time activities, described below.  

Before and After Class - Students choose from a list of structured and open play activities, set up by our team leaders. These activities include: study hall, gym sports, yard play, indoor games, arts & crafts, music and more. This activity is built into your child’s daily schedule as a structured free play before and after their selected club for the day.

Inspired by their favorite comic book artists and armed with their imagination, student create characters and story lines, first in single panels, then in comic strips, and finally creating complete comic books at the end of each semester.

Our young chefs learn essential kitchen skills, from measuring and converting fractions to slicing and chopping to sauteing and plating. We develop and encourage nutritious food choices while working together to prepare snacks and meals. Every class ends with a delicious treat!

This hands on-club offers girls the opportunity to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in a unique single-gender environment. While engaged in project-based learning, Girls Only STEM aims to improve both girls' confidence and interest in math and science.

Next Level LEGOs

Kids will receive daily challenges of structures to build with Legos. There will also be time for students to explore on their own and in small groups, building creations of their own invention.

Young students with little or no chess experience learn the fundamentals of chess, beginning with game board setup, and an introduction to how the pieces move. Students will learn to play full games from opening moves to checkmates within the first semester.

Parkour

Parkour has quickly become one of the world's fastest-growing and most highly efficient training methods for mind, body and spirit. Using the natural environment as a play space, practitioners (called traceurs) test their limits by running, climbing, jumping, vaulting and rolling over obstacles, as a means of adapting to and then overcoming the mental, physical and even emotional challenges that arise from the physical barriers themselves.

Students will create armatures, puppets and sets, and complete the production process of an animated movie using professional capturing and editing equipment and software.

Children receive the same instruction and swim experience as our Youth swim lessons.  Your child will be picked up directly from their classroom at school dismissal, have a snack, and be transported to the Downtown Community Center for childcare activities provided by our After-school staff.

Skateboarding

We have teamed up with a professional skateboarder who will be teaching skateboarding from the perspective that it is a multifaceted activity and has several specialized disciplines such as Street, Transition, Sliding, Slalom, Freestyle, Cruising, Downhill, Push and Distance Skating. This club offers a 3-part curriculum of skateboarding beginning with a variety of comprehensive lessons for beginners, intermediate riders and advanced. Safety is a priority, therefore students must always wear a helmet, wrist and elbow guards as well as knee pads in order to participate.

Inspired by Carl Warner, Christine McConnell, and lovers of Legos, students will plan and build edible structures of all shapes and sizes. Our multidisciplinary art classes offer students a chance to explore different media from drawing and painting to collage and sculpture. Coding and Creative STEM

Coding is learning to communicate with computers and requires reflection on what motion is, how we describe colors, and how we organize and share things like space and time. Learning to create 3D objects on computer is part of it too. STEM means learning how things work and can include taking things apart and learning how to make new things.

Flag Football

Students develop skills, good sportsmanship and a sense of team spirit. Players are divided into groups based on experience and skill level. Each class session includes a lesson, drills and a game or scrimmage.

Never mind that chess is a great exercise for the mind that increases math and literacy abilities. Chess is a great game, and kids love it! We offer beginner, intermediate and advanced chess classes, as well as an annual tournament for students in our Manhattan Youth programs.

Jazz & Show Dance

This challenging class explores a range of styles from around the world, ranging from contemporary to classical, and emphasizing jazz funk and Broadway. Students will learn dance combinations while improving individual and group skills. The class culminates with participation in two fully-staged dance performances by Manhattan Youth's entire dance ensemble.

Cool Crafts!

This creative hands-on class has students working on a new and very cool craft project every week with their favorite after-school staff members!

In our art classes, students will have the opportunity to develop their skills in fundamental drawing, painting, and clay sculpting techniques, as well as explore a wide range of creative crafts. Throughout each session, they will work with a variety of art media, including watercolors, acrylics, oil pastels, chalk, colored pencils, pen and ink, clay, collages, and more, all tailored to their age and skill level.

Engineering, Coding & 3D Printing

Once thought of as a magic solution of the future, 3D printing is now a booming industry that yields serious benefits for the world. This course introduces students to basic engineering theories and principles by using 3D printing. It introduces design and fabrication processes to build hands on artifacts that demonstrate complex engineering topics in everyday life.

Parkour

Parkour has quickly become one of the world's fastest-growing and most highly efficient training methods for mind, body and spirit. Using the natural environment as a play space, practitioners (called traceurs) test their limits by running, climbing, jumping, vaulting and rolling over obstacles, as a means of adapting to and then overcoming the mental, physical and even emotional challenges that arise from the physical barriers themselves.

MY Influential Magazine

Does your child love watching videos on social media? Your Mini Influencer is now a Manhattan Youth Journalist.  This class is an opportunity for students to learn how to write scripts, interview friends, and even our staff, record and edit videos. Students will also learn about internet safety and have the opportunity to create and operate a class fan page that can be shared, via private link, with family and friends.

Volleyball

A fun, active, instructional session for both beginner-level and advanced players who are interested in developing their volleyball skills.Students will learn the basic skills of bumping and serving, and the rules of the game.

Filmmaking

In this hands-on class, young filmmakers will conceptualize stories and bring them to life. Students will learn how to handle and use camera equipment, basic short composition, direction, collaboration, and basic editing skills in order to turn their story ideas into short films.
